China Doll Hits Colombo
By Hafeel Farisz

Its been a month and a half since I tasted what the newest sensation in Colombo had to offer and yet the gastric juices within me are willing to disappoint the moment the "China Doll" dish hits my head.
Living in a day and age where the world seems to be running out of time and unable to cope up with the fast pace lifestyle many of us in Colombo are inevitable exposed to the newest arm of the “Chinese Dragon” food chain. They have decided to offer their high end clientele just what they need, from where they need it to where they want it.
The novelty is no surprise to the western world but “China Doll” brings in a whole new dimension to the “food world” that we in Colombo are used to. The core of the tantalizing of the taste buds rests in the providing of noodles how you really want it.

The Mee Goreng for those who like spicy, the Sesame seared Tuna Bento box, the seafood Laksa, the Char Kway Teow and the Hor Fun Beef Noodles are all a part of the extensive menu that the “Doll” has to offer. The fact that what the Doll has to offer is not only exquisite in its taste but most importantly was capable of feeding three hungry boys who just came home after a good game of rugby speaks volumes of its volume itself.

“Our inspiration is taken from the famous South East Asian Hawker stalls, we ourselves love eating simple, fresh tasting food and our desire is to share that same passion with as many people as possible. We also like different and unique experiences. That’s why our aim is to provide a healthy alternative to fast food: food that tastes authentic, delicious, and focuses on being nutritious as well as visually appealing” Said Jerome Ferdinandus the General manager of Chinese Dragon the patron wing of China Doll. With rapid rate of growth of food outlets within the city I asked him as to why he thinks anyone should go for what Chian Doll has to offer and he was very confident in saying that “China Doll has a great variety of dishes- we deliver power packed soups, noodles and salads to curb any craving. We also have Bento Style lunch boxes with a choice of Chinese BBQ favorites and Japanese inspired grill will tempt any serious food lover.

We also have a range of Chinese ice teas which complements our Asian inspired menu.

We feel China Doll offers customers a unique choice of great tasting and Health smart (MSG Free) foods at an affordable price, delivered to their doorstep.” And that of course was a revelation to me as I was so sure with the common notion that all the preservatives and the taste enhancers is a must in todays competitive market. So its not only about the food being good but digestive system friendly as well is really an added bonus. A bonus lot of people in today’s society seem to be ignoring.

The plan for China Doll is simple they want to be the next big thing in Colombo – why and how Jerome explains “As we are newly starting out our focus is on ensuring we maintain delivering all of our customers the freshest quality and great tasting food. We hope to keep extending our already wide menu while ensuring that we maintain our high standards in presentation and delivery.

We are always looking at expanding our customer base and ensuring that our brand stays fresh and interesting and hopefully soon, China Doll will become a household name. “ And for me personally I think it has the potential to be so too provided that the delivery is always on time and when needed ad there is no compromise in quality- something that many a food outlet seem to ignore once they have established themselves.

The menu sent is simply mind blowing. The repertoire that comes with China Doll will I’m sure fascinates any noodle lover. But for the average lankan who goes err what do you think I should order Jerome spells it out “We always like to encourage people to try something new and venture outside their comfort zone. We have a great range of noodles but for those who are just starting to get to know our menu we can confidently recommend the Char Kway Teow and Hor fun noodles and for those who like extra spice the Mee Goreng and Mee Siam is defiantly the way to go. The Sesame seared Tuna Bento box, Tangy prawn and Green mango salad and spicy seafood Laksa are a must. We now have the Soy Roast Duck bento which we feel will be a big hit!!! And encourage they have don’t you think? With all that on offer who wouldn’t want to give it a shot at least once

There needs to be a mention about the ultra cool packaging which I learnt was a design of one of those creative friends I happen to know Kum Kum. The enigmatic look about the little dolls on the pack indeed gave it a real Chinese flavour even before the senses felt the aroma. And selling this idea was apparently a challenge for the “dolls” says Jerome “Because of our unique packaging we found it a bit challenging to source our vision but are happy with our range of noodle boxes and packaging. Initially, we were apprehensive to the reaction that our customers would have to our design and packaging but we are elated with the positive response and feedback!

Our badges have become a fashion statement!” So they have over come that initial apprehension too…!!!! And with regard to the response Jerome says it’s been literally off the hook. “Extremely positive! We already have a repeat customer base that is growing in size every day. With any new business starting out, there have been a few hiccups along the way but we learn from them and are appreciative for the support and feedback from our customers.” That in itself im assuming speaks volumes of how soon and far this concept has caught up.

It’s the season all over the world and I wanted to know if China Doll has come with anything special to the clientele pat came the answer “We are now offering Soy Roasted Duck and Soy Roasted chicken! Both of these can be ordered in our meal for one bento boxes and for those celebrating with friends and family you can order whole or half portions.” So you know who to call as soon as you figure out that special times indeed require extra special treatment for those special people.

I was convinced that China Doll is indeed a cut above the rest. The attention to detail is just mind blowing from the packaging to the delivery to the professional answering of the calls and most importantly the great tasting foods all make it the first place I would call nevertheless I needed Jeromes input on why he thinks they are a cut above the rest.? Colombo has a wide range of restaurants and food outlets which all have their own style, we at China Doll place a strong emphasis whenever possible on promoting local produce and seafood. All our sauces, stocks and pastes are made from scratch in house. Each dish is made to order specially for each customer.

At China Doll you won’t find any MSG, artificial additives or colorings in our dishes. Wherever possible we avoid any unnecessary oils & fats, and we present a variety of vegetarian options within our menu. We are great at putting together a fun, and different menu for any party. So if you’re interested in outdoor catering, we are always willing put together a specific menu for your event. ” And that explains it all.

Like I told you at the start its been one and a half months since I tasted what “Doll” has to offer and for sure wouldn’t mind another offer to have some home today. I’m guessing you wouldn’t stay as long as I have for your second order, give them a shout on 7 777800 and have a look at the menu on www.chinadoll.lk.
